Overcome Hair Loss with PRP Treatment
Hair loss is a condition that affects millions around the world, both men and women. There are many reasons for hair loss, including:
- Family history (heredity)
- Hormonal changes
- Medical conditions
- Medications
Regardless of the reason for your hair loss, it can be scary and make you feel insecure. Luckily, there are solutions out there. There are many treatments available that can potentially help with hair loss, including medicines and shampoos, but results have shown that Platelet-rich plasma or PRP treatment has presented improvement in the growing phase of hair, reversed hair thinning and reduced hair fall.
What is PRP treatment?
Platelet-rich plasma is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein derived from whole blood, centrifuged to remove red blood cells. When injected, PRP is known to heal the skin and garner the growth of cells. Research has shown that PRP therapy has been considered an effective treatment for hair loss and to treat androgenic alopecia or male/female pattern baldness.
How is PRP prepared?
PRP is prepared by drawing your own blood. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the blood into its various components – platelet poor plasma, platelets and red blood cells. The blood continues to be treated in the centrifuge until only the enriched cells (platelets) remain.
How is PRP treatment given?
Prior to the injections, a numbing cream is applied to the scalp to reduce any pain or discomfort. In some cases, a local anesthetic may be given to prevent pain. The PRP, including essential growth proteins, is injected into the scalp, deep into the skin at the roots of the hair. The treatment typically takes around 60-90 minutes to be completed and is often given once a month for around 6 months for desired effectiveness.
Research shows…
Elghblawi Ebtisam, MD published her findings in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology supporting the use of PRP therapy for hair restoration. “…a new injectable procedure to enable stimulating hair growth locally and topically; preventing its fall; improving hair shaft, hair stem, and its caliber; increasing its shine, vitality and pliability; and declining hair splitting and breakage.”
Advantages of PRP Therapy
Aside from the obvious boost in confidence, there are many advantages to PRP treatment theropy, including:
- Straightforward, non-surgical procedure
- Safe and reliable results
- Very quick recovery period
- Natural-looking end result
PRP treatment vs. Hair transplant – which is best?
There is not one simple answer to this question; it depends on a variety of factors and will vary on a case-by-case basis. PRP therapy may help with an increase in hair growth if you are in the ‘thinning’ stage; however, if your hair fall is a bit more advanced, a transplant may be more appropriate. Occasionally, PRP is even used in conjunction with hair transplant procedures. The only way to know for certain which one is best for you is to talk to an experienced hair transplant specialist.
